6 emerging technologies in education

  1. I must admit that I was really one of those people that thought technology (facebook, twitter etc) interfered with my teaching since it was a huge distraction to students. I saw technology as an enemy since I had to constantly fight against it in the classroom and believed that technology was one of the reasons for the lack of attention in my class. Last week I realised that the proverbial proclamation “if you can’t beat them, join them” had to be adopted.
Thus, in an attempt to overthrow and defeat one of my enemies I have decided to devise a strategy to incorporate the use of technology to facilitate authentic learning.
Background info: The Food Technology 2 students have weekly food production practical sessions where students are given “supervisory” responsibilities. The supervisors of the practical need to plan, organise and execute the practical session with the aid of the “non-supervisor” students. A written report is normally expected from the supervisors to discuss the results of the practical in a scientific manner. Each student receives two opportunities to be a supervisor during the semester.
Technology Strategy: The supervisors will need to prepare a presentation where they will critically evaluate (reflect on) their supervisory roles and the capacity in the position to either positively or negatively influence the production environment and the reasons for this. They will also have to reflect on what they can and will do differently next time around and why. The supervisors will be recorded during their presentation and this will be uploaded on blackboard & Facebook group via SoundCloud (Podcasting) (needs to be investigated by me). All the students will have access to the Podcasts and will therefore be able to learn from their own trials and tribulations as well as from each other.
